From Candid to Classic: Capturing the Joy of Prom Night in Saratoga

Prom night is a milestone event that teens look forward to for months—sometimes years! It’s a celebration of friendship, style, and the transition to a new chapter in their lives. But before the big night begins, there’s an often-overlooked opportunity to capture some truly magical moments: the pre-prom photoshoot. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a group of high school students at a beautiful backyard home in Saratoga, California, and I’m here to share why these pre-prom sessions are so special and offer some insights for future clients looking to create lasting memories.

Why a Pre-Prom Photoshoot Matters

Prom is a whirlwind of excitement and emotion. Once the evening gets going, it’s easy to miss out on those quiet, intimate moments—like a proud parent adjusting their child’s bow tie or the laughter shared between friends as they admire each other’s outfits. This is where a pre-prom photoshoot comes in. It offers a chance to slow down, take it all in, and get a mix of classic posed photos and candid moments that really show everyone’s true personalities.

For this Saratoga shoot, I focused on creating a blend of timeless portraits and relaxed candids that captured both the teens and their families. With the backyard’s lush greenery as the backdrop, we were able to set up various scenes that highlighted the group’s excitement and camaraderie. The families were also thrilled to have their own time in front of the camera, turning what could have been just another photo session into a mini-event that everyone will remember fondly.

Creating the Perfect Blend of Candid and Classic

One of the biggest challenges for a photographer is finding the right balance between posed and candid shots. While traditional posed photos are great for framing and sharing with grandparents, candid photos are where the personalities really shine. In this session, I made a point of capturing:

  • The Classic Group Shots: Think of these as the timeless photos you’d expect from any formal event—groups of friends standing in neat rows, smiling directly at the camera.

  • Individual Portraits: Each teen got their moment in the spotlight, whether it was a close-up of a boutonniere being pinned or a dramatic full-body shot showing off their dress or suit.

  • Candid Interactions: This is where the real magic happens. Friends cracking jokes, parents getting a bit emotional, and even the small in-between moments like a quick hug or an unplanned twirl in a prom dress.

By alternating between these styles, I was able to tell a complete story that highlighted not just the elegance of the evening, but the joy and anticipation leading up to it.

Highlighting the Unique Saratoga Setting

Location plays a big role in the feel of a photoshoot. The backyard at this Saratoga home was the perfect blend of sophistication and comfort. With its well-manicured garden, elegant patio, and natural light streaming through the trees, it gave us plenty of options to work with.

For clients considering their own backyard for a pre-prom shoot, don’t underestimate its potential! A backyard can provide a personal, relaxed environment that’s ideal for capturing genuine emotions. If you’re planning a similar session, consider these tips:

  • Set up Multiple “Scenes”: Use different parts of your backyard to create a variety of looks—perhaps a garden nook for solo portraits, an open lawn for group shots, and a shaded patio for more intimate family moments.

  • Embrace the Evening Light: Golden hour (the hour before sunset) is a photographer’s best friend. The warm, diffused light creates a soft glow that makes every shot feel magical.

Making Everyone Feel Comfortable

Teens can sometimes feel self-conscious in front of the camera, especially when they’re dressed to the nines for an event as significant as prom. My goal is always to make them feel comfortable and confident. During this session, I found that keeping the mood light with humor and encouraging them to interact naturally made all the difference. Instead of stiff poses, I got genuine smiles and moments of joy.

For parents, this was a chance to be part of the experience too. Including family members in the session added a layer of depth to the photos that really made them stand out. Seeing parents and teens together in their formalwear created a beautiful contrast between the celebration of youth and the pride of parenthood.

Why Choose Pre-Prom Photoshoots?

Prom is more than just a dance—it’s a memory in the making. Capturing these moments before the main event allows you to highlight the anticipation and excitement, not just the final product. If you’re looking to create a complete prom experience, consider booking a pre-prom session to ensure every detail is documented.
